On this page you can find people who died of COVID-19 by age-group. It’s horrible how many grandparents have died, and it’s tragic that too many young people have passed. No matter how old someone was nor how many pre-existing conditions they had, they would still have brightened this world longer if COVID-19 hadn’t taken their lives.

Talmage “Tal” Dwain Hillman

Talmage Dwain Hillman of Godfrey IL died of COVID-19 on December 16, 2020 at the age of 75. His final message before he died was "wear a mask, the life you save may not be your own." Tal spent his life helping people live better lives through his work with the developmentally disabled at Bellefontaine Habilitation Center. He's remembered for the way he lifted everyone up, helping employees he managed to reach their potential as they helped the residents they worked with. After retiring in 2013, Tal stayed in touch with his old coworkers, finally had time to golf more, and loved live shows and Cardinals games. Lately he had started to forget things and moved into an assisted living facility, but he "remembered two current things: Covid & he hated Trump." Tal was still madly in love with his wife of 54 years and they were able to Facetime together before he passed.

Helen Therese Pagel

Helen Therese Pagel of Ellisville, MO died from complications of COVID-19 and congestive heart disease on December 15, 2020 at the age of 93 at Missouri Baptist Hospital. Helen was raised in Milwaukee and met her late husband while working as a night clerk at the rail road. They started and ran Brown Mill Tavern and Cafe on the upper Michigan peninsula for 21 years while they raised their six children. Helen was incredibly proud that all her kids worked at the family business and went on to graduate college. Her and Roy enjoyed 52 years of marriage until his death in 2006. She was known for her wide range of artistic talents, from sketching graphics for her kids' science projects to sewing costumes and tailoring clothing. For the past two years, Helen lived in an assisted care facility being visited as often as possible by her large family and watching reruns of her favorite TV shows (The Lawrence Welk Show and Gunsmoke). A devout Catholic, she attended Mass as long as she was physically able to.

Evelyn Charlotte Slater

Evelyn Slater of Washington MO passed away of COVID-19 on April 15, 2020. Evelyn was a kind, nurturing woman. Besides taking excellent care of her husband (who preceded her in 2009) and family, she worked for many years as a nurse's aid. Evelyn died a few days after being diagnosed with COVID-19.

Kenneth Duane Bjelland

Kenneth D. Bjelland of Alton, IL died after a lengthy battle with COVID-19 on December 10, 2020 at the age of 74. Ken captained a sailboat named The Midnight Sun and was a regular fixture at Lithia Springs Marina in Shelbyville. His favorite things were sailing, seafood, and anything to do with water and travel. He retired as DeWitt County Farm Bureau manager in 2016 after 35 years and moved from Maroa IL to Alton to be with his wife. Ken will be remembered for his dry wit, adventurous palate, and love of life.

John H. “Jack” Doerr

John ("Jack") Doerr of Kirkwood died after a brief battle with COVID-19 on November 27, 2020 at the age of 83. After serving in the Army as a cook, Jack met his wife at a VW rally in Webster Groves and they raised their two daughters in Kirkwood. Jack worked as a self employed general contractor until he retired, and was living at Friendship Village Sunset Hills for the last few years of his life.

St. Louis Metro’s first known COVID-19 Death: Nurse Judy Wilson-Griffin

Perinatal nurse specialist Judy Wilson-Griffon advocated for better health outcomes for at-risk mothers. She was the first person in St. Louis confirmed to die of COVID-19.

Dolores E. Weekly

Delores E. Weekly died of COVID-19 on November 30, 2020 at the age of 91. She lived in Overland MO for most of her life, and was an active member of the Overland Historical Society. Delores was a skilled quilter and knitter. After retiring from Pet Foods, she sewed gifts for her family and friends, and donated her handcrafts to charities. She loved doing many things, but lunch with friends was her favorite activity of all. Delores was known for her independent, cheerful spirit.

Jerry Mooneyham

Jerry Mooneyham died at Missouri Baptist Hospital on January 9, 2021 from complications from COVID-19 at the age of 86. He married his highschool sweetheart and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War on board the USS Mount McKinley.

Carl Edward McLittle Jr.

Carl Edward McLittle Jr. passed of COVID-19 on May 17, 2020 at the age of 74. He was a Vietnam War veteran, a loving father and grandfather, and a lifelong learner. He's missed deeply by his family, friends, and all those who knew him.

Bruce R. Mausshardt

Bruce R. Mausshardt died of COVID-19 on April 20, 2020 at the age of 68 years old. A keyboardist, piano player, and all around musician since he first learned to tickle the ivories at 5 years old, Bruce had played in several bands over the years. He also loved everything about St. Louis from with his favorites being World Wide Magazine, Forest Park, Elicia’s pizza, and Mom’s Deli. Bruce suffered from Alzheimer's the past 11 years but could respond to his favorite songs, "air piano", and mouth out the words.

Thomas J. Martin Jr.

Thomas Martin Jr. of Lonedell in Franklin County MO died of COVID-19 on December 12, 2020 at the age of 74. Tom grew up in St. Louis County and joined the Army right after Highschool during the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge, Tom started as a salesman for a food distribution business. He worked his way up, while raising a three kids with his wife, and eventually managed several food distributorships. Tom loved his faith and took joy in all kinds of outdoors activities, whether hunting, fishing, hiking or just mowing his yard. Most of all, Tom loved his kids and his grandkids, and took lots of pride in being a wonderful husband and father.

Audrey May Sullivan

Audrey May Sullivan of Florissant MO died of COVID-19 on January 15, 2021 at the age of 96. Audrey was born on February 29, 1924 making her a leap year baby, which she was very proud of. She was past president of the Florissant Lady Elks, a lifelong Cardinals fan, and worked and taught candy-making classes at Fischer’s Cake & Candy for over 40 years.

Lawrence F. Pranger

Lawrence “Larry” Pranger, of Jerseyville IL, passed away on December 29, 2020 at Jersey Community Hospital from complications related to COVID-19 at the age of 82.Larry attended Illinois State University and was drafted to serve in the Army during the Vietnam War. He married the love of his life while on leave the day after Christmas in 1961. Larry worked for Shell Oil Company in Jerseyville as he and his wife Mary Ann raised their four kids. He was a gifted coach and regularly led youth teams at St. Francis Xavier School to championships in track, baseball, football, and basketball. He and his late wife also took very active roles in raising their grandkids and helping out in their parish, attending mass every Saturday night.

Donna Lynn Schroen Naylor

Donna Schroen Naylor of Bethalto Illinois died of COVID-19 on December 11, 2020 at the age of 70. She caught the novel coronavirus in November and passed soon after. Donna was a retired teacher, having touched countless young lives for 33 years in Cottage Hills and Bethalto East. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in education from Southern Illinois University, and was continually enriching her mind by reading books and learning. Donna never had her own children, and poured her love into her school kids, fur babies, and volunteer work. She and her late husband shared a passion for therapy dogs, which they'd take to local nursing homes. Long before COVID-19 hit, Donna knew the importance of making sure that families don't go hungry; you could find her every Thursday at The House of Victory Food Pantry ministering, praying with, and giving groceries to those in need. She continued this volunteer work through the pandemic, until becoming sick herself from COVID. Donna is remembered as being one of the most cheerful people that anyone could possibly meet. "You could count on her to laugh at your feeblest joke and enthusiastically cheer your slightest success."

Betsey Elaine Young

Betsey Elaine Young of St. Clair MO died of COVID-19 on December 1, 2020 at the age of 47. Her parents and sister were allowed to be with her before she was removed from the ventilator. She passed shortly after. Betsey made Christmas ornaments every year for her friends and family. Her boyfriend since 2011 was ready to propose to her this Christmas. She also loved her four cats, her job working for the Missouri Department of Social Services in the Family Support Division, and called her mother every single night. Any kind of travel, but especially to the beach, was a welcome escape and adventure! Betsey was always there to help her friends and her cheerful compassion quickly made everything all better.

Thomas “Rick” Boul

Thomas R. "Rick" Boul died May 9, 2020 from COVID-19. He was 68 years old. Born in Belleville IL, Rick lived and worked in Belleville most of his life and will be missed by his extended family and friends.

Gary Bader

Gary Bader passed away January 26th, 2021 of COVID-19 at the age of 75. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Carl Phillip Schmidt

Carl P. Schmidt of Saint Louis, MO passed away December 28, 2020 at the age of 91 following complications from COVID-19. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War, but he didn't go overseas.

Mr. Arthur Lee Coleman

Arthur Lee Coleman contracted COVID-19 at the beginning of May. Although he tested negative before passing of congestive heart failure on May 29, 2020, it is to be assumed that the coronavirus weakened his heart and his body was unable to make a full recovery post-infection. He was 79 years old. Arthur Coleman retired from Wonder Bread after being employed for over 27 years. He was a loving father who loved being a grandpa. Arthur Coleman is missed deeply by his grandson, granddaughter, and daughter. His daughter wrote, " There isn't a day that goes by that my kids and I don't think about my daddy. I love you dad."

Marie B. Baszis

Marie Baszis died of COVID-19 on May 7, 2020. She was 94 years old and caught the novel coronavirus in the nursing home she was living at. Her husband and life companion of 72 years had passed barely 6 months earlier in late 2019, and she was still sad about his death. Marie Baszis is missed deeply by her grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family and friends.

Angela R. Jones

This memorial is unedited, as written by her family: Angela Renee Jones, 53, passed on May 9, 2020 after contracting COVID-19. Angela Renee Jones was born on January 26, 1967 in Saint Louis, Missouri. Angela belongs to a large family and an even bigger blended family. Angela was affectionately known as "Cookie" and also later as "Cook Book" and "Auntie Cookie".Angela was a proud graduate of Soldan High School. She kept in close contact with her fellow classmates and she loved to attend alumni events. After graduating from Soldan in 1985, Angela attended Southeast Missouri State University where she studied Accounting. She also attended Saint Louis Community College where she studied nursing. Angela earned her certification in Phlebotomy and she worked for the Saint Louis Red Cross for over 10 years. Angela always did her part to help serve others. Angela had a rare blood type and she regularly donated her blood. Angela later worked for United Health Care Group for 13 years until she contracted COVID-19. Angela always made the time to volunteer and serve in her community. She would often thank others for giving her the opportunity to serve.

Dr. Gaye Griffin-Snyder

Dr. Gaye Griffin-Snyder died of COVID-19 on June 6, 2020. She was a professional counselor in St. Louis County and worked as an adjunct graduate professor at Missouri State. She helped out countless people through their struggles with mental health and emotional issues. Her daughter Angela wrote "She died with strangers and couldn’t respond to me in any way when I got to say goodbye via video conference. It haunts me constantly."

Barbara A. White

Barbara Ann White died of COVID-19 in St. Peters, MO on May 20, 2020 at the age of 93. She obtained her degree in social work from Washington University. Barbara loved her family, her husband (who preceded her), her cats (who also preceded her), and her friends. She lived an interesting and long life, and gave so much!

Carol Ann Todd

Carol Ann Todd was beating cancer when she was struck with COVID-19. She went to the emergency room feeling ill and never saw her family again. One of her daughters, Vanessa Trotman had just lost her mother-in-law to COVID-19 the day before on May 9th. Vanessa and her husband, faced with deaths of both of their mothers, had to grieve physically apart from family, friends, and church.

Beverly Hobaugh

Beverly G. Hobaugh of Farmington died of COVID-19 on September 20, 2020 at the age of 59. 10 days before her death from COVID-19, she recorded a warning message and posted it to Facebook. Beverly was a member of the Farmington Church of the Nazarene. She also volunteered at The Life Center and was an empathetic, tireless caregiver in her to her family. Her compassion and generosity touched inspired her friends and acquaintances.Beverly is missed deeply by her family, especially her twin sister, her extended family, friends, church family, and everyone else whose lives she touched.

Marvin Louis Platt

Marvin Louis Platt died of COVID-19 on April 10, 2020. He was 93. Marvin saw being a businessman and family man as all the same, and excelled at both loving his family and succeeding in business. Marvin devoted the last few years of his life caring for his wife of 68 years after she became afflicted with dementia. He is dearly missed by his four adult children, seven grandchildren, wife, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Joan M. Clines

Joan M. Clines died from complications of COVID-19 on July 29, 2020. She spent most of her life in Ferguson and was a bus driver for the Ferguson-Florissant school district for almost 50 years. During the summers, she co-managed the pool at January-Wabash Park in Ferguson and taught hundreds of kids how to swim. Joan Clines is remembered as being full of life, active, and a great friend. She's missed deeply by her adult children, grand children, great grand children, former coworkers, and all the now-grown kids who she ever taught to swim or who were lucky enough to ride her bus.

James Allen Shupe

James (Jim) Allen Shupe died of COVID-19 and sepsis on January 14, 2021 at St. Louis Mercy Hospital at the age of 79. Jim spent many happy years after his retirement from Seven Up fishing on his dream house's lake in Cedar Valley.

Helen Sydow Clark

Helen S. Clark died November 26 from complications of COVID-19 and congestive heart failure at the age of 82. She graduated from St. Louis City Hospital’s School of Nursing in 1959 and went on to have a long career in nursing, staying involved in the alumni association after retiring. Helen raised her two daughters with her late husband and loved being a grandma. She supported various nonprofits, read voraciously, and played a good game of checkers. Before COVID-19 hit, she was a daily regular at Miss Sheri’s Cafeteria in South County.

Dr. Nelly Grosswasser

Nelly Grosswasser, Ph.D., a professor emerita of Russian literature and the founder of the Russian program at Saint Louis University, died of COVID-19 on Dec. 16, 2020 at the age of 95. She was described as being feisty and a "true force of nature". Like the Russian literature she taught, Nelly's life story involved romance, war, and spanned continents. She was born in Kharkov, Ukraine, USSR and moved with her brother to avoid the Nazis during World War II. She met her (late) husband Sol (who had just been released from a labor camp) while in Kazakhstan. They escaped to Germany after the war, eventually immigrating to the USA with their young son in 1949. Although she had a BA in engineering, Dr. Grosswasser's true calling was education, in which she earned an MA and PhD from Washington University. Her impressive career accomplishments are detailed beautifully in the sources below, but what she was probably most noted for was being St. Louis University’s first full-time Russian language teacher, remaining at the university for 47 years. Nelly mentored thousands of students, was voted most popular teacher at SLU numerous times, won many teaching awards, and continued to support students of Russian language long after retiring.

Ursula Milla – master seamstress

Ursula Miller died of COVID-19 complications on April 15, 2020 at age 94. She'd immigrated from Germany in 1951 and loved sharing her heritage with friends and the neighborhood. She was a devoted mother and is missed by her extended family, friends, and neighbors.

Margaret Mary Hellrich

Margaret Mary Hellrich (nicknamed Meaux) died from complications of COVID-19 and "general health issues" on August 28, 2020 at Stearns Nursing Home in Granite City, IL. She was 58 years old. Although born with Down's Syndrome, Margaret's family loved and fully supported her so she was able to live a fulfilling life, traveling overseas to Europe and Australia and all around the country. She was very involved with the Catholic Church throughout her entire life, advanced through Special Education, and found employment and even more friends at the Sheltered Workshop. Margaret loved music, dancing, animals, camping trips, and leopard print clothes. Her special friend of 30+ years was Pete, who would take two different busses to visit her as much as possible until the nursing home locked down for COVID.

Matthew Leake

Matthew Joseph Leake died from COVID-19 on August 24, 2020 at the age of 60. He was trying to beat cancer, but caught coronavirus and died alone in the hospital. Matt was known by his friends as a giant teddybear because of his gentle, kind, big presence. He played Santa every year for 30 years and brought joy to countless children. One of his biggest loves in life was singing, and he was a previous member of the St. Louis Cathedral Archdiocesan Choir when they performed at the Vatican. Matt was a Fourth Degree Knight in the St. Ann Council of The Knights of Columbus and a devout Catholic. He's remembered as being warmhearted, generous, a great friend, and someone you wish were your brother or son or uncle.

George Lee Chartrand

George Lee Chartrand died from COVID-19 on June 1, 2020 at the age of 90 in a St. Louis nursing home. Lee was a Korean War veteran, having served our country in the Airforce as an airplane mechanic. He retired "early" from McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) and began his third career as an antiques dealer and ice-cream shop owner. Lee and his late wife (Jo, whom he was married to for 65 years until her death) loved spending their retirement in their bit paradise, down by Troy Missouri. Lee was a gifted story teller, and would regale his grandchildren with fun memories including his favorites of when he was a race-car driver with his brother. He loved music, taught himself to play piano, and was in his element when entertaining. George Lee Chartrand is missed deeply by his 7 children, 18 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren who he adored. He's also missed by his Masonic brothers and family, his many friends, community, and the many many people whose lives he brightened while he was alive.

Howard W. Marshall

Howard Marshall passed of COVID-19 on April 10, 2020 in his room at Frontier Health and Rehabilitation in St. Charles. Although he had Alzheimers and couldn't use the phone by himself, he still recognized his family and used a wheelchair to get around. Howard Marshall belonged to the Carpenter’s Union Local #1310 and worked installing floors until his retirement. He loved watching documentaries, fishing, working on his car, and helping his friends out. He was known for being a gentle, kind, man. He's missed deeply by his children, stepchildren, extended family, and large circle of friends.

Jimmie Allen Palmer

Jimmie Allen Palmer of Collinsville, IL died December 16, 2020 at Mercy Hospital from COVID-19 related complications at the age of 79. Jimmie was a retired carpenter millwright, enjoying retirement with his wife of 62 years. He loved nothing more than a good bargain, and was a daily visitor to Pawn King in Collinsville. Jimmie was also passionate about classic cars (especially his blue Challenger), playing golf, spending time with his family, and laughing. He coached his four kids' baseball and sports and had a blast being a father, and even more fun being a granddad and great granddad.

Clifford R. Youngstrom

Clifford Russell Youngstrom, a WWII veteran, passed away on May 15, 2020 in hospice care at St. Luke's Hospital after a courageous battle with COVID-19. Due to restrictions, his loved ones were unable to be at his side, but they spoke continuously with him phone to let him know their love and support.

Richard “Ike” Eichenberger

Richard "Ike" Eichenberger died from complications of COVID-19 on December 23, 2020 at the age of 76. Ike had a lifelong career in music, and served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War as Acting Commander of the American Division Band in Chu Lai, South Vietnam. He was a music educator for over forty years in Orchard Farm, St. Charles, and Ferguson-Florissant school districts and at Fontbonne College, Lindenwood University and Meramec Community College. Ike was a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, performer, mentor and teacher throughout his life. He and his first wife Mary were an amazing musical team. They had no children and welcomed their students into their hearts and home. Mary passed away, and in 2017 Ike remarried and was immediately loved by his wife's adult children and grandchildren.

Patrick Wayne Vadnais

Patrick Wayne Vadnais of St. Charles died of COVID-19 complications on April 8 at the age of 70. He was musically inclined and wrote songs, played piano and guitar, sang, and passed his knowledge onto younger folks. Patrick Vadnais is missed by his daughter, step-father, brothers and sisters, extended family and friends.

Dr. Ruth Louise Beckmann Murray, EdD, MSN, RN, CS, N-NAP, DAPA

Dr. Ruth Louise Beckmann Murray passed from complications of COVID-19 and pneumonia on June 25, 2020. Her 40 year career in the nursing department at St. Louis University included roles as a Program Coordinator, Psychiatric-Mental Health Professor for Undergraduate & Graduate Nursing Education, and textbook author. Dr. Ruth Beckmann Murray inspired and guided thousands of nursing students in their professional paths as Nurses, helped thousands more in her various other helping roles, and reached countless through her publications and community advocacy. She mentored and profoundly touched many lives personally, as the memories posted on her obituary describe. Her vibrancy, kindness, and love are missed far beyond her immediate and extended family.

Richard “RC” Bartholic

Richard Bartholic died August 8, 2020 of COVID-19. He was 82 years old and died in an assisted care facility. Richard is remembered for singing to his closest friends, loving food, and being an all around amazing friend and great guy. He had an inspiringly positive attitude while continuing to recover from a stroke. After COVID-19 forced nursing homes to stop allowing visitors, his eyes would light up when the staff helped him use the phone to talk with his wife and family. Richard Bartholic is missed deeply by his wife Gayle of 64 years, his extended family, friends at The Stroke Club, friends he made at the assisted care facility, and everyone in his social circle.

Raymond H. Bayer, Sr.

Raymond H. Bayer Sr. died of complications from COVID-19 on July 20, 2020. More than his career, Ray was a family man and married to his wife for 51 years. He was a doting father to his six children and truly enjoyed spending time with his family. He always had a smile and was loved by many.

James Edward “Jimmy” Evans

James Edward "Jimmy" Evans died on April 6 of COVID-19 at the age of 82. He fell ill with coronavirus while at Frontier Health and Rehabilitation in St. Charles, MO and within a few days was rushed to the hospital where he died alone and confused. He had Parkinson's and Alzheimer's but he could still recognize his brother when they chatted one last time on a phone-video call.

Richard C. Mintzlaff

Richard "Dick" Mintzlaff died of COVID-19 on November 11, 2020 at the age of 77. Dick worked with the St. Louis ARC for over 25 years, was an avid participant in community theater and Renaissance Faires, and did his best to live by his morals. He was also very active at his church (Zion Lutheran Church in Maryland Heights) writing Sunday school curriculum, singing in the choir, serving as an elder, and helping out in countless other ways. He would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need, and he's remembered as being inclusive and welcoming to new people in his social and work spheres. Dick loved being a husband to his late wife and a father to his two girls more than anything.

Ruth Sandler

Ruth Sandler died of COVID-19 on August 27, 2020 at the age of 94. Ruth was a dedicated wife to her late husband, and a wonderful loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a kind and sweet friend and was always there when you needed some help. Ruth Sandler is missed by her family, extended family, and friends.

Danny Harold Stephens

Danny Stephens of Bridgeton, MO lost his fight with COVID-19 on April 24, 2020. He was 70 years old. Danny was passionate about helping people, and got his Masters degree from UMSL He worked at the Missouri State Department of Vocational Rehabilitation for 35 years as he raised his family.

Gregory J. Warnecke

Gregory J. Warnecke of Belleville, Illinois died of COVID-19 on December 31, 2020, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital at the age of 90. Greg would make handtools and decorative pieces out of wood as a child growing up in Clinton County. After he finished serving in the United States Army Security Agency, he went to work as cabinetmaker with the Markus Cabinet Company, before switching to working on residential and commercial projects. Greg's love of woodworking was possibly only exceeded by his love for his wife, who he recently celebrated 58 years of marriage with in May 2020. In retirement, Greg liked traveling, fishing, spending time with family, but he continued his passion for woodworking through designing and building furniture for his home and for St. Mary's Church in Belleville. His craftsmanship can be seen on the "refurbished sacristy cabinets, both the Easter candle and Advent wreath stands, credence table, and extensive restoration of our Pieta statue and the figures in our Christmas Creche, to name a few."

Jason Moss

Jason Moss died from complications of COVID-19 on January 20, 2021 at the age of 52. His body had cleared the coronavirus, but could not recover from the devastating effects of the disease. It was up and down for a long time, with 49 days on ECMO and almost two months on a ventilator. He fought hard but suffered from two strokes in his brain, and his body shut down for the last time. Jason grew up in Collinsville IL, traveled the world in the Navy, then came back to St. Louis and graduated from St. Louis University with a bachelor's degree. He most recently worked administration and analysis for a local hospital. His pride and joy of his life was his three sons, triplets, born in 2005. He was a Boy Scout Leader and poured his heart into being the best father in the world.

Patricia Ann Hennessey

Patricia Ann Hennessey passed of COVID-19 on April 21, 2020. She was 67 years old. She is loved and missed by her sisters and large extended family and friends.

Dr. Fred Phillip Handler, committed husband, devoted father, epic storyteller

Dr. Fred Phillip Handler died of coronavirus complications on April 20, 2020 at the age of 95. He had lived a long and love filled life. The son of immigrants, his parents placed a high value on education and his mother made sure that her children attended college and graduate school. Dr. Handler is loved and missed by his adult children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and all the friends and acquaintances whose lives he touched over the years.

Mark Wilhold

Mark Wilhold of Fairmont City, IL died of COVID-19 in a hospital on December 3, 2020 at the age of 59. Mark worked for Kiesel fuel, & Consolidated Ice & Fuel most of his life. He had a son and a daughter with his ex-wife, and a grandson who he loved very much. Mark was close with his family and circle of good friends, and would do anything for a friend.

Barbara Ann Molloy

Barbara Ann Molloy died after a brief battle with COVID-19 on November 10, 2020 at OSF St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton IL at the age of 80.Barbara worked for many years as a nursing home administrator and was known as a cheerful caring person with an infectious laugh who never met a stranger. Greunetta (G.G) Groce passed of COVID-19 on May 1, 2020 at the age of 78 in a nursing home. She was a retired CNA and interior decorator. Her son wrote: "She was born April 26, 1942 to Bernice Randle Pow and George Wilson Groce Sr. In East St. Louis Ill. She was a small business owner, a nurse, and interior decorator. She was loved by many. She is survived by one son and one daughter and one granddaughter and a host a family and friends."

Dr. Frank E. Seifried, D.D.S.

Dr. Frank E. Siefried, D.D.S., died of COVID-19 on July 24, 2020 in a nursing home. Professionally, he was known for his skill and gentle touch as a dentist. More important than any of his career achievements (which included serving in our military), Frank was a loving father and husband. He was quick to joke and laugh, or to tell a fascinating story. He loved taking his family on adventures and vacations, spending quality time with his grandkids, and making those around him smile. Frank spent his last years in St. Louis retired and consummately in love with his wife Bonnie. She cared for him until his health failed and he moved into a skilled nursing facility. After the "COVID-19 lockdown" started and residents were put into isolation, Bonnie went to visit him every day through his room's window. Bonnie wrote, "This lock out of families did not protect the most vulnerable, rather isolated them and left them. There surely must be a better way of dealing in the future. The only peace I have is that he is no longer suffering in that place. This is a terrible, inhumane way of treating our elderly with no recourse."

Dr. William G. Ridgeway, M.D. Ophthalmologist for over 40 years

Dr. William Ridgeway served two years in the US Air Force as a flight surgeon with the rank of Captain before completing his residency in ophthalmology at Washington University. He decided he loved St. Louis, put down roots here, and served three generations of patients as an ophthalmologist in St. Louis and South St. Louis County. He died of COVID-19 on April 24, 2020.

He caught the virus while he was resident at White Hall Nursing and Rehab Center in White Hall, Illinois. They had just celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary when COVID-19 took his life.

Richard E. Schweigler

Richard Schweigler died of COVID-19 on November 16, 2020 at the age of 86 alone except for the hospital chaplain at his side. Richard was born and raised in St. Louis and retired after 35 years as a civil engineer for the Missouri Highway Department; but his true passion was hockey and sports. He worked St. Louis Blues games as an off-ice official since the team's inception in 1967 until 1994, most of that time as a goal judge. He also played hockey himself, coached and refereed. Richard also played minor league baseball, coached baseball and umpired men's softball.

Dr. Robert E. Kuhlman

Robert E. Kuhlman died of COVID-19 at the age of 88 on January 10, 2021. After completing a research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health with an associated appointment in the Public Health Service, Robert returned St. Louis to complete his surgical training in orthopedic surgery. He received the first grant establishing the Orthopedic Research Fellowship program at the medical school. He had a private practice as an orthopedic surgeon and was adjunct faculty at Washington University for 38 years and coauthored numerous research papers. Robert loved photography, dining out with his late wife (d. 2010), home improvement and spending time with his five kids and numerous grandkids.

William “Bill” French

William "Bill" French lost his fight with COVID-19 on December 20, 2020 at the age of 77. In 1977 Bill founded Wm French Buyers Real Estate Services, Inc., a comprehensive relocation service that focused solely on the buyers’ interests with a relocation plan tailored specifically to their needs. It was, at the time, the first and only buyers-only model agency in the country, and grew to be the largest. Bill worked tirelessly to grow the business as he and his wife raised their two sons. He was a passionate advocate and volunteer for the Independence Center, served on the Board of Directors for 8 years, and never missed an opportunity to assist in furthering the organization's mission to holistically help those with severe and persistent mental illnesses.

Jane Durbin Jensen

Jane Jensen of Kirkwood died of Covid19 related complications at the age of 83 on October 25, 2020. Jane was married to the love of her life, Bill, for 19 years until his untimely death in 1979. She returned to work, raised her four daughters, and never remarried. A devout Catholic, Jane lived her faith by helping others, and passed those values on to her daughters (two of them grew up to become doctors). After 20 years as a secretary at the Museum of Transportation, Jane retired and threw herself into volunteering with St. Patrick's Center, St. Peters Church, and other community causes. She was truly a doer with actions behind her words and thoughts. Jane Jensen is missed deeply by her daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, church family, and by the many people whose lives she helped make better through her volunteer work and friendship.

Alvin George Edgell was enjoying his golden years in health at Alexian Brothers Landsdowne Village close to his family when he was struck with COVID-19, over 6 weeks after the nursing home locked down to visitors in an effort to prevent coronavirus. Still very mentally sharp, he was using email to communicate until his last days. Al died on May 4th at the age of 96 with his son, a doctor at the hospital, by his side.

Larry Darnell Parker Sr. passed of COVID-19 on July 24, 2020. He was a 62 year old retired Navy Veteran and married for 43 years. When he died, Larry was still a machinist for GKN Aerospace (formerly Boeing), where he had worked for 37 years.Larry loved golf, jazz concerts, and traveling with his wife... but what he loved more than anything was spending time with his grandchildren. Rosie Mae Walker

Rosie Mae Walker passed at Saint Louis University Hospital of COVID-19 with her family watching via video on their phones and iPads on April 9, 2020 at the age of 87. It's thought that she caught COVID-19 at a family BBQ in early March after which several family members became ill; one of her sons was still recovering at another hospital when he found out she was dying alone. Rosie Walker was the family matriarch, with 15 children of her own and a tremendously large extended family including two great-great grandchildren. She was widowed twice and retired to St. Claire Illinois to be close to family and joined the Mount Moriah COGIC in Centreville. Rosie would give her heart and soul to help anyone in need.

John Keith Vernier

John Vernier, a 62 year old Registered Nurse at Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis died of COVID-19 on January 12, 2021. John was retired from the US Navy where he served for 21 years on submarines and served during Operation Desert Storm. After retiring from the military, John went back to school for his RN degree, and took a few classes with his daughter Christine who was also in nursing school. John had a true helper's heart and was always there at any time for his family, friends, and coworkers.He had three daughters with his wife of 37 years, and LOVED being a grandpa. John was looking forward to retiring from his second career and enjoying more family time.

He was 81.Billie proudly served our country in the National Guard and retired from Laclede Steel after 42 years as an electrician. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union and served as a shop steward for many years. He was a lifetime Democrat and a member of various Church of Christ churches. Especially in his retirement, Billie enjoyed watching his grandsons in their sports, spending time at Lake of the Ozarks, fishing, family pets, and watching old westerns. Billie McDermott is missed deeply by his wife of 59 years, his two children, grandchildren, family, extended family and all his friends.

Michelle supported friends and strangers alike in their struggles, a trusted and respected pillar of empathy and strength. She loved her fans and community and they loved her back.

Jerome D. Schneider died of complications from COVID-19 on June 26, 2020 at the age of 93. He was a twice widowed former accountant who, even though the ravages of Alzheimers, still enjoyed listening to Frank Sinatra and eating cheese blintzes.

Mary Ellen Roarty died from complications of COVID-19 on April 14, 2020. She was 90 years old and living at Garden Place Senior Living In Columbia, IL. Mary and her husband Joe raised their family in Belleville, IL, where they owned Joe’s Bonafide Service Station. When Joe passed (several years ago), Mary moved from their home to Garden Place Senior Living. They were supposed to move in together, but he passed away before the move. Although she was heartbroken from the loss of her husband of 69 years, she embraced her new home. Mary made many friends and was loved by the staff. She became part of the Garden Place Gals singing group and performed the National Anthem at a Grizzlies baseball game.

Sharon Kay Wylder

Sharon Kay Wylder of Carlyle Illinois died from complications of COVID-19 on December 29, 2020 at the age of 78. Sharon grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois attended St. Teresa's Academy and graduated from St. John's School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. As a nurse, she cared for everyone from nursing home residents to newborns. Sharon raised her five kids with her late husband, and loved it when she was able to retire and spend more time with her grand kids.

Irene A. Taschler died July 20, 2020 from complications of COVID-19. She was 95 years old. Irene was a respected former executive secretary at Emerson Electric. She stayed active with her late husband, visiting their second home in Hawaii and traveling often to see family in Austria. Toni was a long-time member of The St. Louis Women’s Club, Algonquin Golf Club, and St. Vincent De Paul Parish.

Deborah Nagler grew up in St. Louis and Kansas City and attended Washington University for her undergraduate studies. She died of COVID-19 on April 3 at the age of 66 in Teaneck New Jersey. Deborah was a great mind and accomplished in STEM education and active lifelong in Jewish education.As the St. Louis Jewish Light concluded: "Deborah’s leadership and great love for her family will continue to reach people who may never even know her name, but will live, love, and succeed because of her."

Robert Elsperman – Former Tarlton President

On March 30, Robert "Rob" Elsperman, the former Tarlton Corp president, was admitted to a St. Louis-area hospital with COVID-like symptoms. He died of complications from COVID-19 eight days later on April 7. He's remembered for leading through example and having genuine respect for the tradespeople in the field who actually do the work.

Sharon Marie Adams

Sharon Marie Adams passed from heart failure due to COVID-19 on July 15, 2020 at the age of 71. Although she'd recovered from a lengthy battle with coronavirus and tested negative shortly before her death, the virus had weakened her heart too much to for her body to stay alive. She was afflicted with Parkinson's and had recovered from a stroke, and thought she was going to survive COVID-19 like she had everything else.

Gladys Gosslar

Gladys I Gosslar (nee Felgenhauer) lost her battle with COVID-19 on August 15, 2020. She was 90 years old. Her son was able to be with her when she left this earth. Gladys was retired from Lutheran Hour Ministries. She's missed deeply by her family and friends.

Ellen Lydia Brasunas

Ellen L. Brasunas died of COVID-19 three days after turning 96 on November 19, 2020. Ellen was a woman who gave to others and helped them heal. She first worked as a psychiatric nurse, stopping to raise her three children and returning to work as a public health and school nurse once she moved to St. Louis. When she was 52 she went back to graduate school to pursue her passion, counseling, and opened her private practice in 1980. She continued to be active as a therapist, and held her license until at least 2017.

Angel Marie Dampier

Angel Marie Dampier died of COVID-19 on June 10, 2020 at the age of 40. She was a direct care worker for over 13 years at South County Habilitation Center in Mehlville MO and leaves behind a young son and husband. Angel is remembered by her friends as being a loving and dedicated mother, and she always had something to smile about.

Harry Arthur Pilcher died on May 29th, 2020 in St. Louis, MO after contracting COVID-19. He was 88 years old. He was born in Junction City, Kansas on July 15th, 1938. Harry is missed by his great grandchildren, grandchildren, and three daughters.

William "Bill" C. Robertson of Fosterburg, Illinois died from COVID-19 on Sept. 9, 2020 at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was 88 years old and left behind his wife and soulmate of 64 years.Bill was an Airforce veteran and worked at Albrecht Hamlin Chevrolet until he retired in 1996. Bill was an active member of Fosterburg Baptist Church for the last 56 years, serving as Deacon and Trustee. He also taught Sunday school and vacation bible school, and always had candy to give to the kids. Bill C. Roberts is deeply missed by his wife Virginia, their son and daughter, grand-kids, and great-grandkids. His church family misses him terribly.

She was known as a spit-fire outspoken advocate of marriage equality and the LGBTQ community, and as a champion of social justice issues. Shirley Maxine was a fiercely independent woman who spoke her mind often and freely and as such was admired by many.

Clarence Davis Sr

Clarence Davis Sr., a World War II veteran, died from complications of COVID-19 on November 20, 2020 at the age of 97. During World War II, Clarence served in the U.S. Navy, achieving the rank of Carpenters Mate Second Class; he was among the first Black enlisted men to attain this designation. He was also a Freemason, a Boy Scout Leader, and an active member of the VFW. After WWII, Clarence worked a variety of jobs before retiring from the Records Management Department at Monsanto. He always loved carpentry, and was known and respected for his skill across St. Louis City and County. Clarence also loved gardening (especially roses), watching baseball, bowling, and keeping active with church activities (St. Johns Church). He was a devoted husband and father, and contributed to the development of countless children and teenagers in the community.

Michael Madison of Freeburg IL died of COVID-19 complications at the age of 68 on November 16, 2020. His wife got to go into his room and hold his hand and say goodbye to him at Belleville Memorial Hospital. Michael was enjoying retirement with his adoring wife of 8 years, and finally getting to take a break from working so hard his whole life. He served in the US Military and his faith was important to his personal strength and life.

Bea was a fascinating woman ahead of her time and progressive in many ways, a lifelong learner, world traveler, stock market investor, volunteer, and obsessed with politics. Her family's statement reads: "Many of her children would have been with her in the end if she hadn’t been isolated in a Covid 19 ward for her last two weeks. We hold the Trump administration directly responsible for robbing us of the opportunity of saying goodbye to our mother."

Afi Williams

Afi Williams died of COVID-19 on August 6 at the age of 47. He grew up in Jennings, attended University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL), and was a devoted father to his three children. Afi had a true zest for life, that was enthusiastically communicated to all who knew him. Afi was an "essential worker" at a hardware store in Florissant (according to Facebook comments) and he thought he caught COVID-19 from a coworker who had recently gone to a large party. The coworker came to work sick and was sent home, but not before he gave it to Afi (and maybe others). Afi's family wrote in his GoFundMe memorial fund: To the world, Afi is another statistic that gets lumped into the life loss and cloud of chaos that have become the norm of this unthinkable pandemic. But let us take this time to reflect and understand that there are faces and families…love and life…heartbreak and pain associated with each number, dot and line on those daily totals and data charts we’ve seen flashing across our TV and computer screens.

Edward Wood Cissell is missed by the hundreds of students and coworkers whose lives he touched, his many friends, his four children, grand children, and extended family.

Joan E. Byrne passed away of COVID-19 on April 18th, 2020 at the age of 87. She spent most of her career to advocating for students in the Parkway School system as a guidance counselor. She found true joy in helping others.

Robert "Bob" Shiflet died of Covid-19 on April 16, 2020 after a "short but terrifying battle" with the virus. Rob was intelligent, gentle, and soft spoken. He happily raised his family while he worked as a biochemist at Sigma Chemical for 37 years. In his off time, Rob was passionate about music. He performed clarinet in the Compton Heights Concert Band, and sang bass in the church choir at First Baptist Church in Ferguson (being very active in the music ministry there). Bob passed his love of music on to his three daughters. Becky took after her father and for many years they both played clarinet in the Compton Heights Concert Band.

Catherine Kutterer

Catherine M. Kutterer died of COVID-19 on September 26, 2020 at Red Bud Hospital in Red Bud IL. Catherine was a resident of Oak Hill nursing home in Waterloo IL when she contracted the coronavirus. Catherine had lived at the assisted care facility for 9 years, getting visited and taken on outings regularly with her family and friends. Once the nursing home locked down in March, her family was unable to visit. Catherine tested positive for COVID-19 on September 18th, and was initially asymptomatic. By the 21st her blood oxygen levels had tanked and she was admitted to Red Bud Hospital where she died surrounded by strangers.

Elizabeth Quinn

Elizabeth Quinn, a WWII military veteran from England who emigrated as a war bride and made St. Louis her home, died of complications from COVID-19 on November 13, 2020 at the age of 94. According to her obituary, "During WWII, she joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service in 1943 at age 18, serving at Bletchley Park with the codebreakers..." Elizabeth had a lifelong love of reading, serving as librarian on the first St. Louis County bookmobile in 1948-49 after the birth of her son, and working as a librarian for 35 more years until she retired. In her later years Elizabeth was still an avid reader and used the library's mobile services, coming very full circle when her photo was placed on the side of a new bookmobile.

St. Louis City’s first known person to die of COVID-19: Jazmond Dixon

Jazmond Dixon died of COVID-19 on March 22, 2020 at only 31 years old.Dixon earned her Masters in Business Administration from Lindenwood after graduating from Harris-Stowe University, and worked for the American Red Cross where she managed the computerized maintenance management system. She dreamed of starting a baking business.

Francis Ethel Westfall Crumley

Francis Ethel Westfall Crumley of Jerseyville IL died of COVID-19 on November 27, 2020 at the age of 87. She was ill for a little less than three weeks, and it looked like she would pull through and get off the ventilator for a little while, but ultimately her body could not fight off the virus. Francis was married twice, widowed twice and lost two children; despite heartaches, her life was full and she found beauty and love in the everyday and small things. She always made time to comfort, listen to, and care for others. In her younger years, Francis worked as a packer for Olin Corporation in Alton IL, canned her garden's vegetables, cooked mouthwatering dinners, and loved to dance.

Carol Junior “CJ” Parkinson

Carol Junior "CJ" Parkinson died of complications from COVID-19 on April 30, 2020. He was 80 years old. CJ grew up in Iowa, graduating college and going on to become a memorable band teacher. He moved to St. Louis in the early 80s with his second wife and retired after managing a local health food store. Carol Parkinson is missed by his daughter, sisters, nephews, former band students, and countless friends that he made both in St. Louis and Iowa.

Phyllis C. Hall

Phyllis C. Hall died from COVID-19 on February 9, 2021. From her obituary: "Phyllis was born in Springfield, Illinois. She graduated from Washington University with a double major of Education and English. She also graduated from Webster University with a Master's degree in Human Resources Development. She ended her career as a recruiter with St. Mary's Hospital. Phyllis was a passionate golfer who loved to be outdoors; loved to dance and most of all, loved to laugh and have fun."

Claudene Goldie Simpson Chunn

Claudene Goldie Simpson Chunn of rural Evansville IL died after a three day battle with COVID-19 at St. Louis University Hospital on January 16, 2021. She was 91 years old. She married the (late) love of her life when he got back from serving in France in WWII and they raised six children.

Martin Francis King, MBA

Martin F. King died August 7 from COVID-19 at the age of 86. He and his wife were preparing to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this month. As his obituary so eloquently states: "Marty’s life was driven by his commitment to “The Four F’s”: Faith, Family, Friends and Fishing. It was this last commitment that was instrumental in the 1989 establishment of the Missouri Stream Team organization. He was a lifelong member of the Conservation Federation of Missouri and Ozark Fly Fishers. He shared this passion with countless friends, family and strangers."

Betty J. Green

Betty Joan Green passed away in Washington, losing her battle with COVID-19, on January 9, 2021 at the age of 79.

Dorothy J. Lauman

Dorothy J. Lauman passed away on May 7, 2020 from Covid-19, at the age of 96. She started playing piano at the age of 6, and was still playing it for the residents of Nazareth Living Center up until about a month before she died (90 years!). Music was a big part of her life, and she taught piano to all ages of students throughout her life. She baked 3000 cookies every Christmas and knitted sweaters for family and pets (and her knitted dish-rags "never wore out"). Setting up her Christmas tree, with stories behind ornaments from every year and part of life, is a memory her grandchildren treasure.

Dr. Edward P. Rose

Dr. Edward P. Rose died of COVID-19 on September 20, 2020 at the age of 74. He was a practicing rheumatologist in Belleville IL until contracting coronavirus, refusing to abandon his patients even though retirement was suggested in March. A polio survivor, Ed devoted his life to his family, science, and service. Ed is remembered as being quiet and unwaveringly stable, although he loved a noisy home with children running around playing. He loved hosting raucous dinner parties with plenty of wine and comfort food, passionate disagreements, laughter, and story-telling. Ed taught his kids to play chess, water ski, follow through on commitments and the values of philanthropy, travel, and enjoying simple pleasures. Dr. Edward P. Rose is deeply missed by his wife of 47 years, 7 kids, 20 grandchildren, extended family, the many friends he made in life, and his patients.

Richard Lee Constance

Richard Lee Constance died suddenly from complications of COVID-19 on November 23, 2020 at the age of 70. Richard had just retired in June from a 45+ year career as a personal injury attorney. He and his wife of 43 years loved St. Louis City living, loved being six minutes away from The Cardinals and the basketball SLU Billikens home games, and were active in their neighborhood betterment association. Rick also played golf and tennis, and was an active member of the St. Louis Athletic Club. He's remembered as being an irreplaceable friend, doting on his nieces and nephews, his warm friendly smile, and how he lived life to its fullest.

Cynthia Whitfield, loving mother and St. Louis nursing home medical technician

Cynthia Whitfield was denied paid sick leave by the skilled care facility she worked at and went to work feeling ill. She worked up until the day before she was admitted to the hospital. Cynthia Whitfield leaves behind four children, her husband of over 40 years, family, friends, as well as leaving behind her underpaid coworkers, and a fucked up system.

Patricia Ann Retter

Patricia Ann Retter, of Jerseyville, Illinois, lost her battle with COVID-19 on December 10, 2020 at the age of 86 at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis. Patricia was the beloved wife of Reverend Edwin Retter and together they raised two daughters while serving in the Nazarene ministry. She liked collecting snowmen, doing crossword puzzles, crocheting, and helping out friends. Patricia was the family matriarch and always quick with a kind word and listening ear.

Jenniffer Anderson-Davis – Nurse working at Meramec Bluffs senior living community in Ballwin (St. Louis County)

Jenniffer Anderson-Davis was a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) living in Hazelwood and working at the Meramec Bluffs Life Plan Community in Ballwin (St. Louis County). She tested positive on April 9 and died of COVID-19 at home five days later on April 14th. Jeniffer worked hard as a single mom to three kids and gave them everything she could. She loved the residents that she cared for, her family, her friends and her church. She is missed very much by all of them.

Peyton Baumgarth

Peyton Baumgarth was 13 years old and in his first semester of 8th grade at Washington Middle School (in Washington, MO), when he died of Covid-19 on October 31st, 2020. He was the youngest person to die, so far, from coronavirus in Missouri. Peyton loved Christmas, making his friends and family smile, playing Pokemon, making Youtube videos about Pokemon, sports, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a typical 8th grade boy and was looking forward to starting highschool in 2021. Peyton's mom told KMOV, "Wear a mask when you're in public, wash your hands and know that COVID is real."

Daniel Edward Schroeder

Daniel Edward Schroeder of Ballwin MO died of COVID-19 on December 10, 2020 at the age of 61. Dan found true joy and happiness in being the most amazing father to his three girls and husband to his wife of 37 years. He worked tirelessly to provide for them, and was looking forward to retiring from Davis Tool and Die in 2021 to spend even more time with his beloved family (including his first newborn grandson). Dan enjoyed fishing, watching ball games, playing almost any game, bowling, backyard gardening, and the outdoors in general. He was always there to lend a hand, listen, and quietly make things better behind the scenes in his quiet solid way. He never missed even the smallest milestone or event with his daughters, no matter how insignificant. As his obituary put it, "Dan Schroeder was not a man of many words, but he was a man full of love."

Edith L. Woodcock

Edith Woodcock of Washington, MO died April 12 from complications of COVID-19. She was 79. Edith retired from Husky Manufacturing in Pacific MO and especially in her retirement loves square dancing and enjoying the outdoors. She was a lifelong supporter of veterans causes and a generous kind friend.

Dolly Naomi Hood

Dolly Naomi Hood of St. Peters, died of COVID-19 on April 10, 2020 at the age of 80. She was recovering from a stroke at The Landing of O'Fallon where she started having trouble breathing and was taken to the ER on April 2. She passed 8 days later in the hospital ICU. Her husband and lifelong companion wrote on her obituary page, "the hardest part was that I could not be with her during any of it." Dolly Naomi Hood is missed deeply by her husband who she was married to for 62 years, her two adult children, her extended family, her many friends, garden club, church, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Gene Rice

Gene Rice of Waterloo Illinois died of COVID-19 on April 6, 2020. He was Monroe County's first known death from COVID-19. As one of his friends posted on Facebook: "Another reminder that this is real and affects all of us in a crushing way. I encourage everyone who knew Gene to pay him tribute in death and wear a mask and save lives. 💙" Gene Rice is missed deeply by Nancy his wife of 63 years, his children and extended family, his family friends who were like family to him, his church family, and anyone who was lucky enough to know him in any way.

Melvin Solomon

Melvin Solomon died from complications of COVID-19 on May 14 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville IL. At 90 years old, he was a WWII veteran and had earned the World War II Victory Medal for his service. After the war, he and his wife Phyllis raised their family, while Melvin worked 30 years at the United States Post Office serving as a letter carrier (ultimately working his way up to supervisor). He also moonlighted as a taxi cab driver, and had lots of stories to tell from doing that! Melvin Solomon is remembered as a kind and generous friend and as a loving father and grandpa. He's missed by his family and every one who knew him every day.

Kenneth Ray McCuistion

Kenneth "Ken" Ray McCuiston died of COVID-19 on December 10th at the age of 75 after a short battle with the virus. Ken served in the Navy during Vietnam and had a daughter who preceded him in death several years ago. He worked as a printer at PrintPack for over 30 years. Ken's life had many challenges, but he was very much loved by his tight circle of friends and family and he is remembered for having a good heart.

Juanita Eason Graham, former Webster Groves preschool teacher

Juanita Eason Graham died of COVID-19 on March 28. She was 55 years old. Juniata Graham is missed deeply by her husband of 18 years, her mother, her family, everyone that she worked with, and the former preschoolers who she introduced to school for the first time. Juniata's husband wishes people to take social distancing and all the precautions seriously, because COVID-19 is not a joke.

MaryCatherine Keene

MaryCatherine Keene died May 20 at Riverside Nursing Home and Rehab Center in Alton Illinois from COVID-19 at the age of 94. She was one of 17 deaths at the home as of August 4th. During WWII, MaryCatherine moved to St. Louis and worked as an airplane riveter, and did all she could to help the Allied causes. She was a master storyteller of her true life stories and was proud of being a woman that worked in her time allowing women to wear long pants.

Elaine Anita Weir

Elaine Anita Weir of Des Peres (St. Louis County) passed of COVID-19 on July 20, 2020. She was 78 years old and also had Alzheimers, but her gentle personality still showed through until the very end. Elaine was appreciated by her friends and family for her pot roast and skills at baking from scratch. She helped the St. Louis community through her volunteer work with the St. Patrick's Center and Birthright charities. Elaine Anita Weir is missed by her seven grandchildren, surviving brothers and a sister... and of course, all her friends and the many people whose lives she touched.

Richard Samuel Rosenthal

Richard S. Rosenthal died of COVID-19 on August 4, 2020 at the age of 86. Richard was a lifelong learner, loved golfing, and was an active father and constant presence at his daughters' sporting events. He mentored in the Saint Louis Public School System and supported various civic causes (among other organizations, he was a past President of the Jewish Family and Children’s Service, and also a member of the Saint Louis University Bequest and Gift Council and the Saint Louis Art Museum Foundation.). Although Alzheimer's had started to rob his mind, Richard accepted the disease with a cheerful manor. He had regular visitors up until the nursing homes shut down in March due to COVID-19 precautions, and still recognized his wife of 57 years and good friends.

James “Chick” Henry Rufkahr

James Rufkahr, a WWII veteran, died on June 1 from COVID-19 at the age of 94 in St. Charles. After serving our country in the US Army in World War II, James worked at Ford Motor Company in Hazelwood for 30 years while he raised his family. After retiring, James worked as a bus driver and handyman for another 17 years. He volunteered with his church and delivered for Meals on Wheels.

Mary Smith

Mary Smith, a special education teacher, died from complications of COVID-19 on December 8, 2020 at the age of 49. She taught for 21 years with the Special School District of St. Louis County, most recently teaching first graders at Fairview Elementary in Jennings. According to KSDK's reporting, "Smith lived with her mother and was her primary caregiver. The week of Thanksgiving, Smith's mother contracted COVID-19 and died a short time later...". The seven students that Mary taught were individually notified, and staff at Fairview held a "therapy session" after the news broke. Counselors are available for students and staff to help them deal with this loss. Mary Smith was much loved by all those who knew her, and special education was her true calling in life. She is deeply missed by all her former students, children of all ages who she helped out in life, her coworkers, and her family.

Mitch Coleman

Mitch Coleman succumbed to COVID-19 on June 29, 2020 after valiantly fighting it for over a month. He was 58 years old. He was a warmhearted man and brightened any room just by being in it. His widowed wife submitted this memorial and wrote: "Mitch Coleman was a follower of Jesus, an amazing husband and father of two, a maintenance worker at The School District of Clayton, and all around great guy. He knew no stranger and loved to make people laugh. He had a fabulous smile and was loved by many. He lived in Arnold, MO with his wife, Kim. In May of 2020 he contracted COVID-19 and spent 30 days in ICU on a ventilator and ECMO machine. On June 29, 2020 he lost his fight to this horrible disease that caused so many health complications. He was only 58 years old and he will always be missed by his family and friends."

Charles Leroy Harper

Charles Harper of Perryville, MO died at Barnes Jewish Hospital of COVID-19 at the age of 81 on February 13, 2021. Charles was a veteran having served in the Illinois National Guard, and married three times. He is remembered as being a "rolling stone" and "restless soul". He had many careers and adventures, most notably in the mining industry working as far away as Columbia South America. He gained his Commercial Drivers License at the age when most people are retired (at age 69) and worked as an over-the-road truck-driver which he only stopped doing because he became incapacted with COVID-19.

Donald E. Lavin

Donald "Don" Lavin died of COVID-19 on December 21, 2020 at the age of 94. Don was raised in North St. Louis and served in the Navy on the USS Borie at the end of World War II. After being honorably discharged, Don completed his studies at St. Louis University and married the love of his life. They raised three children and grew stronger together after the tragic death of their youngest child to heart disease. While Don prioritized his family and faith, his accomplished career in the automotive industry spanned more than forty years, the last thirty-two of which he spent at Chrysler. He was known for his limitless capacity for kindness, his laughter, his epic story telling, fierce poker playing, and driving tennis opponents to insanity with his notorious lob.

Ralph Struckhoff

Ralph Struckhoff died of COVID-19 on September 11th, 2020 at the age of 74. As far as he or his family knew he was perfectly healthy and had the body and mind of someone much younger. He and his wife were looking forward to celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in October (and many more happy anniversaries after that), but now they cannot. Ralph served our country in the U.S. Army from 1965-1967 after which he married the love of his life, Jayne. They settled in Augusta where they raised their two children while he worked worked as a Union carpenter. He was always there to help a neighbor with a home project, listen to a friend, or to spend quality time making memories with his grandkids.

Armella “Millie” Katherine Chisholm

Armella "Millie" Chisholm died of COVID-19 on April 14th at Grandview Health Center in Washington MO, sister facility to the elder-care home that she'd worked at many years as a Licensed Practical Nurse. In her retirement, Millie volunteered with the VFW, attended dances, musicals, family events, and became an avid quilter and crafter (check out her obituary for some pictures of her quilts). She kept a very busy social life, and even when dementia set in, she still enjoyed socializing with other residents and staff.

Glenn R. Manetzke

Glenn Manetzke of Labadie MO died from complications of COVID-19 at the age of 56 on January 1, 2021. Glenn worked at Robometrics in Eureka for 25 years and raised two kids. At times in his life he worked as a volunteer firefighter, newspaper delivery driver, and landscaping business owner. He was a self proclaimed grill master who loved listening to St. Louis Cardinals and Blues games on the radio, bargain hunting, drinking beer with friends, telling corny jokes, and spending time with his 9 grandkids. Glenn was always there to help any friend in need or lend a few bucks to help through hard times.

Audrey M. Tonies

Audrey M. Tonies died of COVID-19 on November 2, 2020 at Dammert Geriatric Care Center in Belleville Illinois at the age of 91. Her favorite holiday was Christmas, which she loved hosting every year (even continuing family celebrations at the Shrine Apartment Community). She'd hoped that COVID-19 would have gotten under control so that she could celebrate with her large family this year.

James P. Mannion Jr.

James P. Mannion Jr. died on December 3rd, 2020 in his home after a short battle with COVID-19 at the age of 90. Jim served two years overseas in The Navy in Japan during the Korean War. He ended up getting his JD from St. Louis University Law School after obtaining his undergrad at the University of Notre Dame. He ultimately specialized in labor relations and worked his way up to partner at Bryan, Cave, McPheters, and McRoberts, retiring in 1990. More than his accomplished career, James loved his family. His first wife's untimely death from cancer left him raising their four young children alone, but in 1978 James found love again in Kathleen, blending their families into a happy chaos of 8 kids. Jim had a "profound" love of reading and history, which he passed on to his kids. Jim and Kathleen traveled widely and he got to explore book stores and follow his passion for history all over the world.

Margaret Pauley “Peggy” Gundlach

Margaret Pauley "Peggy" Gundlach died on April 12, 2020 after being diagnosed with lung cancer and pancreatic cancer, and COVID-19. Margaret is missed by her husband of 67 years, her adult children, her grandchildren, and the many friends she made.

Frank Frederick Graser

Frank Frederick Graser of Bethalto IL died of COVID-19 on December 9, 2020 at the age of 90. Frank served in the US Navy from 1947 to 1951. When he got discharged he married (his beloved wife passed in 2002), raised his two sons, and worked for McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) starting as an A&P Mechanic for 30 years. Frank had a huge variety of interests and was involved in many activities, causes, and organizations throughout his life. He coached Little League Baseball, was a Scout Master, a member of the Bunker Hill Knife Club, Mississippi Garden Club, the Illinois Chapter of the National Audubon Society, and a regular volunteer at the Two Rivers Wildlife Refuge. He was also an active member in the Bethalto United Methodist Church and in retirement enjoyed Monday morning coffee with his "knife brothers". Frank was proud of his boys and loved being a grandpa.

Mrs. Evelyn Otis

Mrs. Evelyn Otis passed from COVID-19 complications in O'Fallon Illinois on April 28. She was 74 years old. Evelyn retired from Touchette Regional Hospital in Centreville IL in late 2017 and was finally enjoying retirement. She was known for enthusiastically living life to the fullest, and loved cooking, fishing, and her family. She's missed by her 3 adult kids, her elderly mother, two brothers, six grandchildren, and lots of extended family and friends.

Ronnie Lattimore

Ronnie Lee Lattimore of Edwardsville passed away December 13, 2020 at the age of 81 after a hard-fought battle with Covid-19. Ronnie retired from his career at Amoco in Wood River and was enjoying retirement with his wife of 63 years. He loved making wood carvings, eating breakfast at Denny's with his friends, and also stayed an active member of Troy/Collinsville Church of Christ.

Sue Harley

Sue Harley, born Alvina Louise Allgeyer, died of COVID-19 on January 25, 2021 in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 84. Sue moved to St. Louis in 2008 where she lived at Gambrill Gardens. Sue raised three kids with her late husband. After they were grown and out of the house, she fulfilled her dream of graduating from college. She continued to work at Cincinnati State College for 16 more years until retirement.

Bill and Pat Olwig married 60 years, died less than an hour apart of COVID-19

Bill and Pat Olwig built a long and fulfilling life full of love together, starting in 1959. They would have celebrated 61 years of marriage together later in May 2020, but instead they both passed away from COVID-19 within about 40 minutes of each other on May 1st.

William D. Baker, WWII Veteran

Dr. Jerry J. Bosse, a clinical psychologist, died from complications of COVID-19 on May 17, 2020. Dr. Bosse was a solo practitioner (of "Life Appreciation Therapy") who believed that excellent mental health and general life satisfaction could be attained by choosing peace and joy.Dr. Jerry Bosse is missed by his six adult children, grand kids, friends, and everyone whose lives he made a little bit better in his vocation.

Mary Agnes Boyer

Mary Agnes Boyer, 93, formerly of St. Louis, passed away April 20, 2020 at Grandview Healthcare Center in Washington, from complications of COVID-19. She is missed by her daughter, extended family, and friends that she made in life.

Phillip A. Catanzaro – died suddenly of COVID-19

Phillip Catanzaro died April 26 of COVID-19. After struggling with it for a month, he thought he was doing better and was looking forward to coming home to his wife of 48 years. Instead he went home to God. His family wants to thank the healthcare workers who cared so well for Phillip in his last days and they request that "In lieu of flowers, we request that you do everything you can to fight this horrific COVID virus."

Velma Moody – Maxine Waters Sister

Velma Moody, died at Grand Manor Nursing And Rehabilitation on May 1 of COVID-19. She was 86. She was a wonderful friend and older sister to California State Representative Maxine Waters.

Beverly Lynn Long

Beverly Lynn Long of Godfrey IL died from COVID-19 after a month-long battle on November 13 at the age of 65. Beverly retired from a dedicated career as a manager at the IRS, where she helped and mentored her team to do their best. She was enjoying retirement with her husband of 45 years and spending more time with their grandkids. She's remembered for being sweet but strong.

Lamar Rodgers

Lamar had just turned 81 on March 18, 2020. Due to COVID-19 this was the first time ever his family was not with him to celebrate his special day. Lamar was diagnosed with COVID-19 around June 15th and lost the battle on June 30, 2020. Lamar enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. His family meant the world to him, he was the oldest son of nine and he wore that title well. He was known to everyone as brother and he never met a stranger.

St. Louis Covid Death: Arnette M. (Laury) Reeg

Arnette Reeg died on Saturday, April 13, of COVID-19. She was 87. The assisted care facility she lived for four years went into lockdown in mid-March, so her family who had previously visited her every single day could not be with her except on the phone. Arnette spent the last 8 days of her life alone and confused in her bed at the hospital.

Raymond Stoltz passed away at Laclede Groves Assisted Living from Covid-19 complications on January 23, 2021 at the age of 89. Ray was a Korean War Air Force veteran and a 40-year retiree from McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. He was a devoted husband and caregiver until his wife passed 4 years ago.

Daniel Kampwerth

Daniel L. Kampwerth of Highland IL died of COVID-19 on October 12, 2020 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in O'Fallon IL. Has 63 years old and had just retired in 2019 after working 44 years on the factory floor at Westrock (formerly Alton Box Board Company). He raised his kids and grandkids with the love of his life, Tami, who he was married to for 41 years and with for 46 years. Dan coached his three daughters' ball games and played basketball with the Weinheimer Holy Dribblers Society Sunday morning basketball league. His favorite sport to play was golf, and he taught his daughters how to play, too. One of the best parts about retiring was getting to travel, play golf, and spend more time with his family. Dan was an active grandpa, and was looking forward to meeting his 4th granddaughter (due at the end of October).

Juanita Rice

Juanita Rice died of COVID-19 on August 12 at the age of 94. Juanita genuinely loved people and opened her home to those in need. Through trying to make this world a little better, she taught countless others how to love and to not give up hope, just keep on fighting and believing for a miracle ‘till the end. Faced with hardship in her own life, it only gave her more empathy, and she truly consistently lived her values. She would do anything to help family, a friend or an acquaintance if they needed her. She never gave up!

Essie Belinda Johnson

Essie Belinda Johnson died of COVID-19 on April 11, just two days after testing positive. She was 69 years old. Essie Belinda Johnson died alone in a hospital, and her family mourned alone. Essie's daughter Tawanda also caught COVID-19, going into the hospital 5 days after her funeral. Nobody could hug her or be there physically with her as she grieved her mother alone.

Lula Mae Cooper-Redd

Lula Mae Cooper-Redd died of COVID-19 on April 9 at the age of 87. Her daughter-in-law's mother, Carol Todd, died of COVID the next day on April 10th. Her son and his wife grieved their mothers lost to COVID-19 together, but apart from their church family, extended family, and friends.

Marian C. Gates

As written: "Marian Constance Gates of Bridgeton MO died of COVID-19 on August 31, 2020 at the age of 96 in the hospital (DePaul) after three days of attempts to conquer her dreaded virus failed. She was a long time nursing home resident where she contracted this dreaded virus. Even though her short term memory began to fail, her long term memory never wavered one bit. No longer will additional wealth of her first hand family history can be shared with the rest of the family. COVID restrictions imposed on family and friend visitors were difficult on all because they prevented both from being with her at the nursing home and hospital during her final days. She was buried next to her beloved husband of many years, Curtis Gates, Sr. Our 96 year old family matriarch will be greatly missed."

Polly Reichrath

Polly Reichrath passed away of COVID-19 on April 28. She had no family except a cousin, but her friend Cecelia was able to put on personal protective equipment and stay in the hospital with her that last day and night to comfort her. Polly is missed by her close circle of friends and all those whose days she brightened with her warm smile.

Ronald Arlen Whitley

Ronald Arlen Whitley died of COVID-19 on May 6, 2020. He was 68 years old and had no underlying conditions. When he was hospitalized his wife and adult children kept thinking that he would turn the corner and recover, but he did not. Ron was a soft-spoken, gentle, kind man who was devoted to his family and loved animals. He worked an accountant with his own firm for over 30 years, and would bring along his dog, cat, and Amazon parrot to the office every day (they are waiting for him in heaven). Ron liked to do just about anything as long as it was with his beloved family.

Grace and Richard Maskell – died 9 days apart of COVID-19

Grace E. Maskell passed away from COVID-19 on May 6, 2020. Richard F. Maskell, followed her 9 days later on May 15, also of COVID-19. Grace was 94 and Richard was 97. They were married 72 years.

Eleanor Podolski

Eleanor Podolski died of COVID-19 on December 26, 2020 at the age of 90. Ellie was known for her contagious laugh, bubbly personality, and love of learning and new experiences. She and her husband Stanley raised two sons and a daughter, and she also helped run the family store (Podolski's Market). Ellie was a member of Polish Falcons Nest 45, where she was a Legion of Honor Bronze and Silver Star of Merit recipient and also a member of the Polish American Cultural Society. In her later years, she lovingly cared for her husband of 67 years as he suffered from dementia until his death in 2017. In her obituary her family wrote, "Please say a prayer for Eleanor and please get vaccinated."

Frank Massey

Frank Massey, passed of COVID-19 on April 17, 2020 five days after his 68th birthday. He had been married 20 years and had seven children. Frank's grieving wife gave an emotional interview with News Channel 5 on Your Side on April 18th: "I want people to know that coronavirus is not a joke. It is not a hoax and it is definitely not fake news because I'm living the nightmare," Cynthia said.

Walter Allen Klein Jr.

Walter Allen Klein Jr. died from complications of COVID-19 on January 19, 2021 at the age of 80. He joined the Army Reserves as a corporal and operated two insurance agencies for over 50 years.

Paul Rusnack M.D.

Paul Rusnack MD, a retired clinical pathologist, died of COVID-19 related pneumonia at the age of 87 on August 3, 2020 at Belleville Memorial Hospital in Belleville Illinois. After completion of his four-year pathology residency program at Saint Louis University, Paul served as Director of the 5th Army Medical Laboratory in St. Louis, MO. He worked as a certified clinical pathologist at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville, IL, for 22 years until he retired in 1988. Paul Rusnack is missed deeply by his wife of 61 years, his children, grandchildren, and extended family.

Dorothy Marie Wolff Goebel

Dorothy Marie Wolff Goebel died of COVID-19 on May 21, 2020 at Riverside Rehab and Healthcare in Alton IL. She was 92. Dorothy lived most of her life in Prairietown (unincorporated Madison County) where she and her husband farmed until his death. Dorothy loved gardening, birds, animals, entertaining, and cooking for guests. Her family visited her regularly until the nursing homes shut down due to COVID-19. Dorothy is missed deeply by her daughter, four grandsons, and large extended family.

Dorothy L. Yancie

"My grandmother Dorothy survived and fought all of the common ailments that have plagued the African American community for years: Diabetes, Breast Cancer, etc...but Covid-19 hit her living facility and a couple days after my election as Committee woman she succumbed quickly and passed away in an area hospital. Away from her son, the only child, family who had to watch her transition via Zoom, but is in the medical profession. Covid 19 took a beautiful person away from us August 6, 2020 at the beautiful of age of 86..rest easy Grandma Dot."

R. Richard Straub

R. Richard Straub died of COVID-19 after a brief battle with the virus on November 24, 2020 at the age of 88. Dick grew up in Webster Groves, graduated with honors from Princeton University, and served as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. After his time in the military, he moved back to St. Louis and completed his J.D. at Washington University with the Order of the Coif. Dick raised his two girls with his beloved wife while he practiced corporate law at Lewis Rice. At the age of 48 he had a major stroke that paralyzed the left side of his body but fortunately left his sharp mind fully intact. In this early retirement Dick threw himself into volunteering and supporting worthy causes (including providing free legal counsel via SCORE, tutoring children, and helping other stroke victims), living life to the fullest (and still golfing, with the use of only one arm). In 2014 he moved from his home of 50 years to The Gatesworth extended care facility.

Carolyn F. Purzner

Carolyn Frances Purzner, formerly of Washington MO, died from complications of COVID-19 on January 14, 2021, in St. Louis at the age of 82. Carolyn had no children of her own, and poured her love into her vocation as an Registered Nurse. She was a graduate of Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in 1959 and worked in St. Louis and then Dallas for many years. She moved back to St. Louis to care for her older siblings who were experiencing health problems. She's remembered as being "the favorite aunt" and was always a nonjudgmental listening ear to vent to or for good advice.

Joyce Octavia (Gardner) Lakes

Joyce Octavia Lakes was admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 on April 2, and passed after a lengthy and exhaustive battle with the coronavirus on June 26, 2020. Joyce worked 30 years for Southwestern Bell after withdrawing from college following the death of her father. Despite challenges in her life, she poured her heart into raising her two children. Joyce somehow always found time for what was important to her; and cultivating authentic relationships tied her busy and varied hobbies together. Joyce Lakes is deeply missed by her daughter, son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, extended family, church family, work family, and anyone who was fortunate enough to pass through her wide social circle. Her daughter publicly posted about her long and horrific battle with COVID-19. Every available option to save her life was exhausted over her 2+ month long battle with the novel coronavirus and hope of a full recovery was not lost until she passed over.

Brenda Susan Schaeg

Brenda Susan Schaeg (nee St. Onge) died of COVID-19 on April 28. She worked as a receptionist at Bethesda Meadow Skilled Nursing Facility in Ellisville, MO. She was known for making extra time to visit with the residents, considered them her friends, and often socialized with them when she was not on the clock. Her coworkers looked forward to coming to work on the shifts that Brenda was scheduled.

Reginald Gladney

Reginald Gladney died July 30, 2020 of COVID-19. He was 56 years old. Reginald served in the United States Marine Corps, Army, and Air Force for 21 years and retired a decorated veteran. After military retirement, he went onto a second career, working for in civil process as a St. Louis County Sheriff's Deputy for 11 years and security for 17+ years with the St. Louis Blues Association. More than his impressive career, Reginald was a mentor, friend, and father. He loved life, his family, and truly saw the beauty in other people. He took his joy from helping make life a little better for those blessed to know or even casually encounter him. Reginald Gladney is missed deeply by his three children, close-knit family, and the entire St. Louis region where he inspired and moved too many people to count.

William Bill England

William "Bill" England died from complications of COVID-19 while suffering from Alzheimer's on December 29, 2020 at the age of 82. After serving in the military, Bill was a graphic designer who worked for Maritz Motivation, Koplar Communication, and retired from Argosy Gaming.

Thomas “Tom” Lovis

Thomas “Tom” Lovis died from respiratory complications of COVID-19 and Alzheimer's related health issues on December 5, 2020. He was in his 90s and living and being cared for at the Sheridan at Laumeier Park the last few years of his life. Tom grew up in Indianapolis and went to Indiana School for the Deaf. had a long career in printing, finally ending up at the St. Louis Post Dispatch where he worked from 1969 until his retirement in 1982. Tom and his late wife Joan Mae Lewis raised two daughters and a son together, which they brought up in the Baptist faith. After retiring Tom switched from working as a part time pastor at Bethany Baptist Church of the Deaf to being the full time pastor until the church closed in 2011.

Dwontreze Terrell Lovett

Dwontreze Lovett died of COVID-19 in August at the age of 29. He worked as a barber and raised bull dogs as Co-Op Bully Kennels. He had a high fever which he went to the emergency room for, and never left the hospital. Nine days later getting admitted, Dwontreze passed away of pneumonia caused by the coronavirus. Dwontreze is deeply missed by the love of his life, Tia who he'd just married in February, his mother, his 5 year old daughter, extended family, and friends. His passing leaves a hole in the St. Louis community and in potential friends he never made because his life was cut short.

Richard Alan Camden

Richard Camden of Wildwood MO died of complications from COVID-19 on May 12. He was 60 years old and married for almost 31 years. Rick was looking forward to taking his son to Sea Base to scuba dive this summer, if the coronavirus pandemic had passed.

Educator, mother, and caregiver: Lisa Ann (Plamp) Steelman

Lisa Ann Steelman was an elementary paraprofessional, caregiver, and mother who leaves behind a loving husband and an autistic son. She died of COVID-19 on April 11, 2020 at age 56.

Earl George Crenshaw – WWII Veteran

Earl Crenshaw, 99, was a fighter in life and tried his best to beat COVID-19 when he caught it at the Meramec Bluffs Assisted Living Center in Ballwin! He passed away peacefully on April 25, 2020.

Victor Allan Cohen

Victor Cohen passed away from COVID-19 at his home on Monday November 23, 2020 at the age of 64 with his daughter at his side. He had been battling lymphoma since late 2018, went into hospice care, and shortly after lost his life to coronavirus. Victor loved hockey and real estate, and brought people together over both. Almost 30 years ago he started The Saturday Hockey League and eventually played year round, every Saturday morning. A skilled player and team leader, he had a way of making everyone feel included and liked. As a highly respected real estate agent, most recently leading the Premier Team with Red Key Realty, Victor was in his element helping countless people find their perfect homes.

Jean Lorraine Crocker

Jean Lorraine Crocker died from COVID-19 on July 29. She grew up in St. Louis and lived her last years in Hillsboro Missouri. She retired after working 20 years as a medical administrative assistant for the St. Louis University School of Medicine.Jean loved animals, tracing her genealogy and family tree, and spending time with her grandchildren and extended family. She's remembered as being a sweet caring woman and always having a nice thing to say. Jean Lorraine Crocker is missed deeply by her grandchildren, extended family, and friends.

Kim Jennings

Kim Jennings, a high school physical education teacher in East St. Louis IL (district 189) died of COVID-19 on April 16, 2020. Less than a year before her untimely death from coronavirus, Kim had helped the Flyerettes of East St. Louis win the Illinois Class 2A state championship (in May 2019), their first state championship since 2011. Kim Jennings touched countless lives as a teacher and coach. She undoubtedly imparted values and ideals of teamwork, facing adversity, and practicing to reach top performance to thousands of children during her time as a teacher. She was vivacious and was looking forward to more years working in her vocation.

LaVerne Annette Schlinkmann

LaVerne A. Schlinkmann died on November 8, 2020 from complications of COVID-19 at the age of 99. LaVerne was born and raised in St. Louis, and worked as a secretary for the old National Screen Co. and then for many years at Monsanto while she and her late husband raised their two sons. Her favorite things in life were her family and church, with music a close third. LaVerne was a lifelong member of St. Paul United Church of Christ on Giles Avenue where she sang in the choir and played in the bell choir, and also kept active with the Phi Beta sorority, the local Toastmistress Club, and as a volunteer usher for the Fox Theatre. In her later years LaVerne moved into BJC Extended Care in Clayton, where she kept her mind and body sharp by making friends with the other residents and playing piano to the joy of everyone! Her formative youth being shaped by The Great Depression and as a young adult during World War II, LaVerne was known for her optimism and courage against odds and for her kindness and sweet nature.

Audrey “Yasmine” Ruiz-Smith

Audrey "Yasmine" Ruiz-Smith died of Covid-19 on April 7, 2020 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Audrey was a member of the St. Louis Japanese Society and the Dances of Universal Peace. She was a creative, vibrant, woman who was passionate about social justice causes and improving the lives of everyone. Audrey made a lot of friends in life and touched countless more through her art and activism. . Audrey "Yasmine" Ruiz-Smith is missed deeply by her daughters Taylor and Sally, by her shih-tzu, and by her large circle of friends and fans.

Peggy Grosberg Ross

Peggy Grosberg Ross died from COVID-19 on January 23, 2021 at the age of 90. She was passionate about making a positive impact in this world and modeled charity, devotion, and compassion. Peggy was raised in a loving family that had a long tradition of giving back to St. Louis, and married Donald Ross, PhD in 1950. They raised their daughter and "spent their lives dedicated to furthering education, helping the needy, traveling to all parts of the world together and happily cruising the Mississippi River on their houseboat." Peggy's true calling in life was philanthropy and making life better for others, and she inarguably succeeded at that.

Lamont Hadley Sr.

Lamont Hadley Sr died of COVID-19 on August 21, 2020. St. Louis lost an inspiration, treasured voice, and musical legend who still had songs left to sing. Undoubtedly, others will discover his music now and in the future, and wish that they had the pleasure of seeing him perform while he was alive and wish he'd lived longer to make more music.

Lt. Colonel Gregory R. Hawkins

Lt. Colonel Gregory R. Hawkins passed from complications of COVID-19 in late April 2020. When he retired in 2007, he was the highest ranking African American at the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. He served our City for nearly 40 years. He never stopped serving the St. Louis community, and was active in helping out until he his death. Lt. Colonel Gregory R. Hawkins is missed deeply by his wife, three grown kids, extended family, his friends and colleagues at the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and ARCHS, and all the countless children and families whose lives he touched.

Robert “Bob” Olsheske

Robert “Bob” Olsheske died from complications of COVID-19 on November 30, 2020 two days after his 86th birthday. In recent years, due to dementia, he was living at St. Andrews at Francis Place Nursing Home in Eureka where he really loved the staff and other residents. Bob's career was in sales, with most of it in the bread business. He distributed Pepperidge Farms, Taystee, and Brownberry at different times. He married his first wife and raised his two kids in Wentzville. After her untimely death, he moved to Florida and remarried. Bob was heavily involved in his church and in giving back to the community, helping to secure funding and mentoring special needs children for Carpenter’s House for Children in Florida. After his second wife passed, he moved back to Wentzville to be close to his adult kids and grandkids. Bob was the last surviving member of his immediate family and truly cherished his children and grandkids.

Shirley Ann Alexander

Shirley Ann Alexander died within 72 hours of being diagnose with COVID-19 on August 23, 2020 at the age of 87. Because of broken bones in her neck from a recent fall, the ventilator caused Shirley to suffer too much and her family made the difficult decision to remove it. A niece was able to don personal protective gear and be with her in her last moments, so she didn't die alone like so many have.

Cheldron “Marty” Fox

Cheldron "Marty" Fox, a WWII Army Veteran who participated in Day 3 of the Normandy Invasion, died from COVID-19 on June 20, 2020 at the age of 100. He'd enjoyed swing dancing, golf, and kept active well into his 90s. He was loved for his quick smile and kind heart.

Alice “Irene” Cordes

Alice "Irene" Cordes died from complications of COVID-19 on November 8 at the age of 94. Irene worked as a nurse for almost 60 years, starting off in 1948 preparing to serve in the Nurse Cadet Corps, but WWII ended before she graduated. When she retired, Irene volunteered for Hospice and continued helping others, even after she quit driving at age 90. Her heart and love was most reserved for her five children, who she raised alone after divorcing from a 15 year marriage. Irene is remembered as being a "sunshine lady"; cheerful, resilient, and resourceful.

Reverend Carl S. Smith, pastor of New Beginnings Missionary Baptist Church and 1st vice president of the St. Louis Metropolitan Clergy Coalition

Reverend Carl S. Smith, pastor of New Beginnings Missionary Baptist Church and 1st vice president of the St. Louis Metropolitan Clergy Coalition passed away on April 9 of COVID-19. He was 64 years old. He and the love of his life Geraldine would have celebrated 37 years of marriage on June 11.

Joan Blase Goodson, St. Louis arts and culture philanthropist

Joan Blase Goodson, a philanthropist and founding board member of the Contemporary Art Museum, died at on May 9 of complications from COVID-19 at the Missouri Baptist Medical Center (MOBap) at 94 years old. Joan Blase Goodson is missed by her nieces, godchildren, her many friends, and the entire St. Louis arts community.

Margaret Schmidt, worked in the family business

Margaret A. Schmidt died of COVID-19 on May 27 at Nazareth Living Center. She was 87 years old. In 2002, she retired from the family business, Schmidt Equipment and Supply Inc., where she'd worked as a book keeper and secretary. She was known for making amazing fruit cakes and enjoying Manhattans and card games.

Cynthia Sue Jenkins, unbreakable spirit and kind friend

Cynthia Sue Jenkins died on April 26 of COVID-19 with her daughter at her side. She'd previously resided in an assisted care facility and was much loved by the staff and friends that she made there. Cynthia was known for being kind, resilient, generous, and a great friend who always had time to listen. Her life was not easy, but she always bounced back and had an unbreakable spirit.

Gloria Fay Prince

Gloria Fay Prince died from COVID-19 related pneumonia on November 29, 2020 at the age of 90. The wonderful staff at The Glen at Aberdeen Heights (in Kirkwood MO) where she lived the last several years were at her side when she passed, so she did not die alone. Fay was a graduate of Normandy High School where she played field hockey and participated in the modern dance troupe. She married her late husband Jack in 1949 and supported his advertising career as it took them to different cities around the country and they raised their four children. Fay was described as being the "consummate homemaker": a Girl Scout Leader. church volunteer, with hobbies that included needlepoint, sewing, quilting and cooking.

John William Kolditz

John W. Kolditz passed away of COVID-19 on April 3, 2020. He was 85 years old. Kolditz was the first Franklin County death attributed to COVID-19, and the first resident of Grand View Health Center in Washington MO to die of the virus. John's family was able to gather outside the window at Grand Manor to wave, and talk with him on the phone until his breathing became too difficult. They passed messages to him through the staff, but he was soon unable to respond. A nurse stayed with him and held his hand in his final hours and moments, which brought his wife of 63 years much comfort. John W. Kolditz is missed deeply by his wife, his children, his large extended family, and those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Diane Bode Dinges Neukam

Diane Bode Dinges Neukam died of COVID-19 on December 12, 2020 at Belleville Memorial Hospital at the age of 70, with her children at her side. Diane had three children with her first husband and loved being a mom and then a grandma. She co-founded Kid’s Kloset before becoming a medical transcriptionist for Belleville Memorial Hospital and eventually retiring from Oncology Care Center in Swansea. Diane loved to travel anywhere there was a beach and sun - to a lake resort or Caribbean! She also loved shopping, dining out with good friends, seeing live music, and gardening. People, laughter, and love mattered most to her and Diane was the type who never knew a stranger, making many lifelong friends from chance encounters.

Mr. Edward Hellm, Jr.

Edward Hellm Jr. died of COVID-19 on April 27, 2020 at the age of 69. He was a veteran who'd served our country, a loving father and husband, and a retiree with lots of friends. He died alone in the hospital on a ventilator. Eddie is missed deeply by his wife, adult kids, grandkids, family, many friends, and all those who knew him.

Joseph C. Budde

WWII veteran Joseph C. Budde died of COVID-19 on December 9, 2020 at the age of 96. Joseph served in the Army Air Corps in WWII flying 35 missions in Europe, including the days leading up to D-Day, followed by another 60 missions in Asia. After the war, he got a degree in electrical engineering from St. Louis University and worked at Sverdrup and Parcel Engineers and Architects for the next 35 years while he and his wife raised their two children. Joseph and his late wife were longtime parishioners at Our Lady of Providence in Crestwood.

Monsignor Nicholas Aloys Schneider – compassionate pastor, author, and liturgist

Monsignor Nicholas Aloys Schneider passed away of complications from COVID-19 on May 5, 2020. He was 89 years old. Throughout his 60+ years of service to the St. Louis Catholic ArchDiocese, he served as a pastor, prison chaplain, was involved with a priest-rabbi dialogue group, and helped countless people in the St. Louis Metro. Monsignor Schneider authored numerous books and articles, and remained active helping others until he could no longer.

Carol A. Strawbridge, retired school principal

Carol Strawbridge was admitted to the hospital on May 3, and died of COVID-19 on May 21 with her family watching 15 minutes away on Facetime as a nurse held her hand. The much loved matriarch of her extensive family, Carol Strawbridge left an indelible mark on her community she helped, the kids she taught, and everyone who was fortunate to know her in any way.

Anthony Daniel Daus Jr.

Anthony "Tony" Daniel Daus Jr. died from complications of COVID-19 on December 2, 2020 at the age of 85. Tony was born and raised in St. Louis. He grew up in Soulard, attended St. Louis University, married his wife Ann, raised their 5 children, and had a successful 55-year sales career in the aerospace industry. He most loved entertaining, dancing, laughing over good food, and talking about his grandkids.

Kathleen M. Becker

Kathleen “Kitty” M. Becker (nee Hamlin), of Ballwin, MO, died after a courageous battle with cancer and COVID-19 on January 28, 2021 at the age of 84.

Kenneth Stephen Daues

Kenneth Stephen Daues, Sr of St. Louis, passed away from COVID-19 on January 3, 2021 at St. Luke’s Hospital at the age of 87. Ken was born and raised in St. Louis, graduating from St. Louis University with a bachelor's degree. He raised four kids with his first wife and was a beloved stepfather to three. Ken's work included the family business, Caterpillar Tractor and he ultimately retired from Insituform Technologies, Inc.. More important than his work was his volunteering and service to the community. He was very active, especially in retirement, in Meals on Wheels, volunteering with at Holy Infant Church, and supported of St. Vincent de Paul Society. He loved connecting with old classmates and spending time with his grandkids.

Leroy J. Huskamp

Leroy Huskamp of Fairmont City IL died of COVID-19 on November 22 at Granite City Nursing and Rehabilitation at the age of 84. Leroy is remembered for being a congenial conversationalist who never met a stranger and who could make anyone smile. He loved to go fishing and to spend time with his family.

Paul E. Struckhoff, Korean War Veteran

Paul passed away on April 28, 2020 at the age of 88 from complications of COVID-19. He enjoyed nothing more than a cold Stag beer, boating, and Cardinals baseball. He was an active member of the O'Fallon VFW and the Augusta American Legion.

Sara J. Crump, EdD

Sara J. Crump died of COVID-19 at the age of 74 on October 21. Sara lived in the St. Charles area and taught 2nd and 3rd grade children at Kratz School in the Ritenour District for 30 years until she retired. She was married over 50 years, and her conservative values were important to her.
